Benzoin Tree (Genus Styrax)
The benzoin tree (Genus Styrax) is native to the southwest Asian region; Laos, Thailand (Siam), Vietnam, China, Cambodia, Borneo, Java, Sumatra, and is also found in some northeast African countries such as Somalia and Ethiopia.
It is a tree that reaches 10 meters in height, its leaves are oval, entire and covered with whitish fluff. The white flowers are grouped together. Its fruit is ovoid, 1 cm in diameter, containing a seed. It is popularly called benzoin.
Making an incision in its trunk, it drips its resin in the form of a yellowish liquid that later turns into sticky drops; Over time it dries and transforms into a hard, very aromatic resin.
There are various species, such as Styrax benzoin, Styrax tonkinensis, among others.
